Dog Nutrition for a Healthy Coat

If you want your dog to have an absolutely pristine coat, grooming is only going to get you so far. You also need to ensure your pooch has a healthy diet to make sure it looks beautiful.

Fatty Acids

While fat certainly has a negative connotation attached to it, there are plenty of healthy fats your dog should be eating. While you do not want to overdo your dog’s fat intake, you definitely do not want to give your dog a diet that is exceptionally low in fat. If your dog is not getting enough fat from its normal diet, then supplements may be necessary.

Omega-6

Omega-6 fatty acids can come in the form of supplements, but you can also acquire safflower or sunflower oil. Simply stir a little bit of this oil into your doggie’s meals, and it will enjoy all the benefits of this supplement.

Omega-3

Omega-3 fatty acids are generally found in fish. Plenty of Omega-3 is particularly good if your dog has skin problems. This supplement is also known for its great anti-inflammatory properties.

If your dog’s coat is looking a little dry or has dandruff, you should take your pooch to a vet to see if he or she can offer any recommendations. To discuss pet nutritional counseling with a vet, contact Hirsch Animal Hospital today.
